Should we need books to be able to use operating systems?

After seeing a tweet by Ed Bott today that his Windows 8 book was now available on Amazon and made to start thinking.  Should today’s operating systems need 700-800 page books to use them?  My first thought is NO, as in this day and age an operating system should be intuitive enough to use out of the box.  May be this is the reason that the iPad has been so successful and Windows 8 is struggling.  I know that some would argue that these are 2 different types of devices but when it gets down to it they are the same.  Even Mac OS X is intuitive enough to use out of the box for most folks and if not then Apple has tutorials on its web sites to assist its customers.  Oh yeah, Microsoft has this too for Windows 8.
