Interesting thoughts by Harry McCracken as to what Microsoft could have done with Windows 8 — including both the upsides and downsides of each.
(I like option #3, which Microsoft has used and made work in the past. But I recognize that this is a much different time than it was back then, and Microsoft is now playing catch-up to other devices by a number of other players. In other words, they need to accelerate change and can’t afford to take such a wait-and-see approach.)
From an enterprise perspective I would have preferred a combination of 1 & 4.
